Need a cute, fun cosplay, but don’t have the time to make one from scratch? Umaru-chan is the perfect cosplay for you. She is one of the easiest cosplays I’ve done, yet, I had the time of my life cosplaying her. Everyone can relate to Umaru-chan’s priorities when she’s chillin’ at home. Seeing yourself in this cosplay, you can’t help but chuckle.

Who is Umaru-chan?
Umaru Doma is originally from the manga series “Himouto! Umaru-chan,” which directly translates into ‘dried-fish little sister,’ but can also mean lazy little sister or useless little sister. And that is exactly what she is!笑 Umaru is a 16 year old girl that lives with her older brother, Taihei. Outside of the house, Umaru seems like the most perfect high school student ever. She’s sweet, popular, gorgeous, straight-A student, and great at sports; an all around flawless young woman. Everywhere she goes, she is constantly turning heads with her beauty and drawing attention to herself while still being modest and humble about it.
However, once she goes into the comfort of her own home, and no one is around to see her other than her brother, she’ll transform into a chibi (mini) version of herself that is lazy, whinny, and annoying. All she does around the house is goro goro (roll around) while watching TV, playing games, eating, and drinking Cola. She loves to annoy her brother for attention and has him do all the cooking, cleaning, and other housework. The only time she ever “cleaned” was when her high school friend showed up at her house to come over. I put the word “cleaned” in quotes because she didn’t really clean, she just shoved all the clutter into a different part of the house.
What you need
Alright, lets get into the things you’ll need in order to achieve this entertaining cosplay. You don’t need to buy much at all. Generally speaking, 80% of the material is probably already in your closet.
Clothes
What is the one thing that screams Umaru-chan? Of course, her bright orange hamster hooded cape! I bought Umaru’s Hooded Cape off of Amazon. I absolutely love the quality of this product. It is extremely soft and comfortable, and I wear this around the house when it’s a little chilly. Even if I didn’t do this cosplay, I’d buy this cape just to keep me warm. 🙂
As for the rest of her outfit, I made do with what I had in my closet. She wears a large white long sleeve as her top and magenta bottoms. I didn’t have a long sleeve large T-shit but I had a short sleeve which was good enough. I didn’t have magenta bottoms either, but I had maroon bottoms; also good enough! Check out your closet and try your best to make do with what you have. Even a white dress would work great. Get creative and make this cosplay your own.
Wig
For her wig, I chose to wear a Short Pink Wig. I know Umaru’s hair is actually much longer but since the cape covers the long part of her hair and only exposes her shorter bangs, I thought this would work great. I’ll be completely honest with this wig purchase, it feels quite fake to the touch. Definitely not the greatest quality for a wig but it’s cheap and fits well. Other than the feel of it, it looks great. I also used this same wig for my other cosplay of Mirai Kuriyama from Kyoukai no Kanata. Check out that cosplay here. Getting multiple uses out of one wig is always a win in my book.
Contacts
I got these contacts from Hapa Kristin. They are comfortable to wear all day, and look amazing. The color is Shocked Kristin in Hazel.
Makeup breakdown
The makeup process was also super simple and took only 4 steps. We’re going for a very natural look, so feel free to go makeup-less as well.
- For the foundation I used Maybelline New York Fit Me Dewy + Smooth in 110. Using a beauty blender, I blended the product onto my face and neck area.
- I used Naked Skin Highlighter to highlight under my eyes, down the bridge of my nose, and the top of my upper lip. I blended the product in throughly with my beauty blender.
- Next, I used Palladio Matte Blush on the tops of my cheeks.
- Lastly, I used Cosplay Anime Eyelashes for my top and bottom eyelashes.
Why this cosplay?
Umaru-chan is a very relatable character in that everyone has at least a little bit of laziness in themselves. Some more than others… (aka me).笑 Now, more than ever I feel Umaru-chan is my spirit-self. After over a year and a half of quarantine life, all I really wanted to do was eat good food and lay around the house.
After watching a good amount of the anime, Umaru-chan really started to grow on me. Rather than the bratty annoying sister she came off as at the beginning, you start to see she really does love and care for her brother and looks out for his best interests as well. It is a very sweet, wholesome anime and quite funny. They make a lot of hilarious references to other anime and it is a overall feel good vibe.
Adding an extra kick
Loving this cosplay but wanting to add a little extra spice? Add a pair of simple Black Shades to this outfit and you’ll cosplay the time she was being spoiled by Kirie-chan and dreamt about being at the beach while still in the comfort of her own home.
Easiest Cosplay – Umaru-chan
Umaru-chan was such a fun character to cosplay. Not only was the preparation cheap and easy, being her for half a day was absolutely awesome. I got to be lazy and roll around my bed, eat chips, and drink Cola; all during the photoshoot as well! I should be Umaru more often to have an excuse to play games and slack off.
“Ellie, did you finish your work?”
“Yeah, I’m cosplaying Umaru-chan.”
“You’ve cosplayed her 10 days in a row!”
But in all seriousness, this was such an entertaining cosplay. I could be my silly self and fit the roll perfectly. Easiest, most enjoyable cosplay ever! Have a great day cuties, till next time.
